Menstruation is an essential constituent of a female reproductive health and wellbeing. While most of the women use Sanitary pads, these contain super absorbent polymers which do not decompose easily. They also affect the environment and enter the food chain causing health hazards to the consumers. Though sustainable and environmentally friendly products have been launched in the market, many still don’t understand the value of such sustainable products.
Taking up the issue, the Visual Media students of Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham recently shot a thought-provoking short documentary ‘PEE RED TO GREEN’, based on Kumbalanghi - the first Sanitary napkin free island-village in India. The authorities ensured distribution of free menstrual cups to every woman in the village and provided them with complete knowledge regarding the usage of menstrual cups and as well about the menstrual cycle. 'THINKAL's - AVALKAAYI' is one among several initiatives and facilities that are provided under the Kumbalanghi's SAGHI SANSAD AADRSH YOJANA scheme.
The documentary CD was published by the respected MP Sri. Hibi Eden and was handed over to the President of Kumbalanghi Grama Panchayath, Smt. Leeja Thomas, to express gratitude to the entire village that lent a helping hand to the students for completing the documentary.
